Home Remedies with Honey

Research in science has proven that honey is packed with antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. So it can be used for health, medicinal and beauty purposes. Here are home remedies with honey that can be used in our daily lives.

Cough suppressant

Several medical studies over the years have proved honey to be an excellent cough suppressant. You can take 2 tablespoons of honey 30 minutes before going to sleep at night on a daily basis up to one week. This will reduce the bouts of cough at night and give you a peaceful sleep. It reduces the intensity and frequency of cough within a few hours of consumption.

You could make a cough syrup with sliced ginger, fresh lemon juice boiled in water. Strain it and use it through the day for up to 3 times. Mix a spoon of honey to the syrup before consuming each dose.

  • Sore throat

Mix two tablespoons of honey in a warm glass of water or ginger tea. You can drink this up to four times a day.

To prepare the balm, mix 1 teaspoon honey and 3 teaspoons of castor oil in a sterilized bowl. Place it on a cool surface for a week and still occasionally until it reaches a smooth consistency. You can apply it on eyelashes and leave it on for an hour to make them lush. Use it once a week or as desired.

  • Face mask for glowing skin

Take an aloe vera leaf, slice it open and scoop out the pulp. Mix 1 tablespoon of honey to it and spread the mixture on your face evenly. Do not rub the mixture on any part of the face. Leave it on for 15 minutes and rise with water to wash it off.

  • Dandruff treatment

US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health has confirmed by conducting a study for using honey to treat dandruff. Mix honey with warm water in a ratio of 90:10. Rub into the scalp by dividing it in portions to make sure every part of the scalp is covered. Use a shower cap to cover and leave it on for 3 hours, then rinse. Continue the treatment on alternate days/ every other day for 4 weeks, post which you can do it once a week or fortnightly to prevent relapse.

  • Dry hair treatment

Mix ½ cup honey with ¼ cup olive oil and apply it as multiple small portions through your hair. Avoid application on the scalp. Use a shower cap to cover the hair and leave it on for 30 minutes. Rinse and shampoo as usual. Treat once a week for 8 weeks to see the difference. Avoid daily usage of tools like hair straightener, curler and blow hair dryer during the treatment.

  • Blood booster

Honey prevents low white blood corpuscle count caused by chemotherapy for cancer patients. In a trial conducted by Mayo Clinic, 40% of cancer patients affected by low white blood cell count had no further episodes of the condition after taking 2 teaspoons of honey on a daily basis while undergoing chemotherapy.

These home remedies with honey are not advisable for infants and children under the age of five years. Home remedies aid for medical issues and are not a substitute for any prescribed medication for ailments other than cough, cold and sore throat.
