What Home Remedies Help a Sore Throat?

What is sore throat?

Sore throat is the pain or irritation in the throat that worsens when you swallow liquids and food. It is primarily due to viral infection.

Here are some home remedies with commonly available ingredients to treat a sore throat.

Honey

During the day, mix a teaspoon of honey in ginger tea taken 2-3 times a day. Two teaspoons of honey can be mixed with a pinch of black pepper powder and consumed as an alternative to ginger tea. One teaspoon of honey taken a few minutes before going to bed tames nighttime coughing.

Salt water

Mix a teaspoon of rock salt or common salt in one glass of warm water. Use this solution to gargle. This is a great help in reducing the swelling/inflammation in the throat. Gargling can be done every 3-4 hours in a day. Avoid gargling for 3 hours after a meal.

Fenugreek tea

To make one cup of tea, add one and half cups of water to a pan. Once the water starts to boil, add one tablespoon of fenugreek seeds to it and boil it for 3 minutes. Add 3-4 mint leaves, boil for one more minute and then filter the tea. Mix 1 tablespoon honey to the fenugreek tea and consume it. Winter and cool seasons are the best time to consume this tea. Avoid in summers when in tropical countries.

Peppermint tea

Peppermint leaves contain anti-inflammatory compounds, hence proving to be very beneficial to a sore throat. Though there are plenty of peppermint herbal tea bags available in the market, a freshly made tea with the leaves has its own wonders. Just add a few leaves to a cup of boiling water in a pan. Boil for 3-4 minutes and strain the leaves. Drink it warm. It can be consumed 3-4 times a day in 3 hour intervals.

Garlic

Garlic is infused with antibacterial properties by nature, so it’s great to fight off infections. Suck on a clove of garlic held between teeth for 1-2 minutes. Post discarding the clove, brush your teeth to protect it from the enzymes. It is not advisable for people who are sensitive to particular foods, have a sensitive stomach or have recent episodes of ulcer in mouth or stomach.

Ginger tea

Peel ginger root and grate it into a bowl. Add one teaspoon of this to a cup of boiled water and cover the lid, leave it put for a few minutes. Strain and drink the ginger tea. This is an easy way to drink fresh ginger root tea through the tea without having to make a fresh cup every now and then. Alternatively, you can add a pinch of grated ginger to one and half cup of boiling water in a pan. Boil for 2-3 minutes, strain, add one teaspoon of honey or fresh lemon juice and drink it.

Lemon water

Squeeze half a fresh lemon in a glass of warm water and add a teaspoon of honey to it. Lemon water is beneficial as it contains Vitamin C and antioxidants. It helps for throat pain that is caused prior or during a cold or the flu.

If sore throat/ throat pain persists for more than two days of treating it with the above home remedies, it is an infection that requires medical attention.
